You just never know…

The idea of starting something new can be exciting & daunting at the same time… especially when you have no idea how to go about making an idea into reality! When I began to research how to start Heliotrope for Hospice last year, I was overwhelmed- all the paperwork filled out correctly, the waiting time to have it all approved, for California, then with the IRS, for the actual 501(c)(3) non-profit status.

The process, the journey, and with each step, I learned.  When things got difficult, I reminded myself, this was all new territory, to be patient with myself. Meanwhile, the main focus was the mission: picking up donated flowers, making  arrangements for people in hospice care.

I didn’t think Heliotrope would be approved until well into 2012, but I received notice in mid-October 2011! What does that mean to a non-profit? It means that as I wondered where the next donation of flowers would come from, people and businesses understood that Heliotrope was “legit“, and from conversations and contacts, sources of product have been coming forward. You just never know… my primary donation source for weekly flowers has been Adelaide’s Flowers in La Jolla. Thru word of mouth, one of the wholesale flower vendors at the Carlsbad Market, Mayesh Wholesale Florist, donated 21 floral arrangements from a design competition last week! Last Monday, the manager in charge of donations at Trader Joe’s in Pt. Loma, called to ask if I was still interested in their ‘spent flowers’.

When you begin something new, there is a lot of uncertainty and doubt that  can challenge your confidence.  Whether it’s a class, or a new job, or learning how to post a blog or a picture on a website  (thank you, Carleton!). For me, it’s about getting out of my “comfort zone” and embracing what I need to know and learn in order to make that original idea into a reality.  And trusting people who have the knowledge, ability & willingness to help.

I’m thankful for the people that encouraged me to keep working toward the goal of Heliotrope for Hospice. It is a small idea- but for me, it has a huge purpose, a personal connection. I hope you begin a new adventure this year! You just never know what can happen…
