connecting the dots…

Update! This week I picked up donations from Trader Joe’s on three days! That’s a tremendous amount of flowers to glean the best for each arrangement. You may wonder where the extra flowers go, when San Diego Hospice has enough for the people in their care. So here’s where “connect the dots” come in!

Meet Ruth Henricks who owns The Huddle Restaurant in Mission Hills, a community of San Diego, and she also runs Special Delivery San Diego, a service that provides home cooked, nutritious meals and delivers them to people who are very ill, in long term care at home. There is a great article about her featured in the local Union Tribune paper, online. Here’s the link to take you directly there-  http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2012/feb/25/tp-special-deliveries-make-sure-neighbors-are-fed/

I used to go to her restaurant for one of the best cheeseburgers in town, and other great, home style, comfort  food. It’s a small, neighborhood place- been around for years. One weekend when I had an overabundance of flowers, Nora, the volunteer who distributes the floral arrangements at San Diego Hospice, said, “maybe the owner of The Huddle, Ruth, would like to deliver some flowers with the meals”, and so I went by, and she remembered me and David from way back! She was thrilled at the idea of delivering flower arrangements to her home bound clients! So began a collaboration- she already has a delivery system, and when I have enough flowers, I drop off floral arrangements for her to pair with her meal deliveries. It’s a perfect match! Her food is prepared with love, and the flowers are arranged with just as much care as her meals. Each provides nutrition, one for the body and one for the soul!

So thanks to you, Nora, for “connecting the dots” from Heliotrope for Hospice to Special Delivery San Diego  and thanks to you, Ruth! It’s a small world when you meet people who care!
